2 billion dollar bomber crashes

AmericaSatellite images show a B-2 bomber collapsing its left arm, sweeping its wings onto the grass next to the runway at Whiteman Air Force Base after an emergency landing.

The US Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) on September 14 confirmed that a B-2 stealth bomber had a problem during a training flight and had to make an emergency landing at Whiteman Air Force Base in the US state. Missouri and damaged on the runway. However, the AFGSC did not specify the extent of the damage to the $ 2 billion stealth aircraft.

Planet Labs today released commercial satellite images taken on the morning of September 15 at Whiteman Air Force Base, showing the B-2 stealth bomber lying on its side on the grass next to the only runway of Whiteman Airport.

In the photo, the left wing tip of the B-2 is brushing the grass, the intakes and exhausts of the engine are covered, many people and vehicles surround the aircraft. The plane’s location near the middle of the runway, suggests it was likely to hit the grass during deceleration.

The source, who asked not to be named, said the B-2 bomber had a hydraulic problem in the air and collapsed its left arm during landing, causing it to veer off the runway and wipe the nose of its left wing on the ground. This information has not been confirmed, but coincides with the sign in the satellite image.

The US Department of Defense has not yet announced the damage of the incident. Military experts believe that the extent of damage of the B-2 can range from scratches to the radar absorber shell to damage to the hull structure and wing fuselage.

The US Air Force established a no-fly zone with a radius of nearly 10 km around the Whiteman base after the incident, saying no people were injured and the landing did not cause fire. “The incident is under investigation, we will release more information when possible,” the AFGSC said.

B-2 Spirit is a strategic bomber model launched by the US in 1988, also the most expensive aircraft in history. The cost of building a B-2 at that time was 515 million USD, equivalent to 1.06 billion USD today. Including research and development costs, each Spirit will cost up to 2.1 billion USD. The B-2 series is the spearhead of all American pre-emptive attacks, thanks to its ability to be invisible to enemy radars.

The United States has produced a total of 21 B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, of which one was completely destroyed due to an incident during take-off over Guam in 2008. Another aircraft was also severely damaged due to an accident. burned on the ground in 2010, but was repaired and put back into service at a very high cost.
