On 8 August, Thua Thien Hue Province’s Department of Science and Technology said it was studying and would submit to the Provincial People’s Committee for approval a scientific research project on landslides across the province.
Accordingly, this scientific research topic has been shelved since 2020, after a series of catastrophic landslides occurred in the Rao Trang 3 hydroelectric field (Phong Xuan commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue).
The scientific research topic on landslides in the province was proposed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thua Thien Hue province. The scope of the project will also create a map to assess the risk of landslides in the region, which will contribute to improving the ability to warn of this disaster risk across the province.
At present, this topic has been reviewed twice by the Scientific Council of the Department of Science and Technology, and is currently awaiting consideration and approval by the Provincial People’s Committee before being put into practical research.

This topic was done more than 15 years ago. However, at present, Thua Thien Hue province still uses information from this research to warn of landslides in mountainous areas of Phong Dien and A Luoi districts when the rainy season arrives.
“To warn about the danger of landslides, we now also ask localities to self-check places prone to occurrence and report back to the Centre. We can issue warnings for rain, weather change , maybe even ask the locality to relocate people living below the landslide danger zone to a safer place,” Mr Hoa said.
