6 magnitude earthquake prompts China to activate emergency response

At least two people died and three were injured after a magnitude 6 earthquake in southwestern China’s Sichuan province this morning.

The China Earthquake Network Center said a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Sichuan province, southwestern China, at 4:33 am this morning. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 km at 29.2 degrees North and 105.34 degrees East.

Authorities in Sichuan province activated the second-level emergency response, the second-highest level on China’s four-tier response scale. Local authorities confirmed at least two people were killed and three injured in the quake, but did not provide further details.

After the earthquake, the city of Luzhou in Sichuan province also activated the highest level of emergency response.

The German Center for Geosciences Research (GFZ) said the quake had a magnitude of 5.5, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) assessed it as “potentially significant damage and possible disaster”. Spread”.
