Beijing warns people to stay away from Olympic convoy

ChinaThe Beijing Department of Transport warned people to stay away from vehicles carrying the Olympic team, even if the vehicle was in a traffic accident, to prevent Covid-19.

Residents of the Chinese capital are not allowed to approach vehicles transporting athletes and staff in and out of the Olympic village, the Beijing Transport Department on January 9 posted a notice on its Weibo account.

The agency said Winter Olympics participants must maintain a “closed circle” and avoid contact with outsiders. Therefore, even if the vehicle carrying the convoy has an accident, people in Beijing also need to maintain a safe distance, not contact the people in the vehicle and wait for the authorities to arrive at the scene.

Last week, the Beijing Olympic organizers announced the start of “closing the bubble”, people inside are only allowed to go out if they leave China or go into isolation, to prevent nCoV infection in the community.

More than 2,000 international athletes and 2,500 related people will travel to China for the Winter Olympics. Organizers did not say how many people were in the “closed bubble”.

The Beijing 2022 Olympics will open on February 4, in the context that the whole world is dealing with the highly infectious strain of Omicron, while China, which has drastically applied the “No Covid” strategy, only recorded few cases of this mutant infection. Tianjin, a coastal city bordering Beijing, on January 9 began mass testing 14 million people after detecting two cases of Omicron.
