The house in Culiacan, in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa, was among 20 expropriated properties turned into raffle prizes. Guzman in 2014 escaped a manhunt through the underground drain of his $184,000 home, but was recaptured six days later.

He was held in a high-security prison in 2015 in Mexico but escaped again. The last Sinaloa drug cartel boss was arrested in 2016 and extradited to the US.

Other prizes include a Mexico City mansion that once belonged to Amado Carrillo Fuentes, the boss of the Juarez cartel, with an estimated value of $3.8 million. Fuentes, nicknamed “The Lord of the Sky”, was considered one of Latin America’s most notorious drug traffickers, until his death on a plastic surgery table in Mexico City in 1997.

“The purpose of the lottery is to turn properties that are difficult to manage, require large maintenance costs, into tangible benefits for society,” said Ernesto Prieto, head of the expropriation agency. speak.

The proceeds from the lottery will be used as prize money for athletes participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
