Chinese fighter jet flies over US warship

China released a video of a J-15 fighter jet approaching a US destroyer, amid tensions over the Taiwan Strait.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV on September 26 released a video of the J-15 fighter jet flying low over the top of an American Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, but did not say when or where the video was filmed.

Video, taken from the cockpit of the lead J-15, shows the two planes apparently unarmed and a jamming system on the wingtips. The J-15 squadron moved along the starboard side of the American warship at a small height, but did not fly over the top of the battleship.

The Chinese military and the US Department of Defense have not commented on the images.

Western military experts say the encounter may take place in the Taiwan Strait, during a movement of US warships through the area.

The images were released by CCTV a week after the US Navy announced the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Higgins and the Canadian frigate HMCS Vancouver made a “routine passage” through the Taiwan Strait. The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the operation demonstrates the commitment of the US and its allies and partners to the free and open Indo-Pacific region.

In recent years, US and allied warships have regularly passed through the Taiwan Strait. Such operations usually take between eight and 12 hours and are closely monitored by the Chinese military.

China strongly criticized the passage of the US warship through the Taiwan Strait, calling it “provocative and ostentatious behavior, undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as causing risks”. security in the region”.

China has always considered Taiwan as a province awaiting reunification and declared its readiness to use force if necessary. Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island. The Chinese military held an unprecedented scale exercise around the island of Taiwan in response to the event.

The US is committed to respecting the “One China” principle, but maintains relations with Taiwan and provides the island with modern weapons. China has warned that its relationship with the US “will be broken if it does not properly handle the Taiwan issue”.
