Cook beans and burn bean sprouts,
Beans in the pot cry.
Born from the same root,
Why burn each other?
(Translation by translator Phan Ke Binh)
The 4-sentence poem was posted by Musk in Chinese, with the caption “Humanity” in English.
The poem is said to have been composed by Cao Shi, son of Cao Cao, in the early third century at the behest of Cao Phi’s brother. Cao Phi then thought that Cao Shi wanted to usurp the throne, so he ordered his brother to write a poem within 7 steps to prove himself pure.
Threatened with his life, Cao Shi used a metaphorical image of using bean branches to boil beans to refer to the scene of brotherhood and sisterhood because of competing for power. According to the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Phi was touched by this poem and spared Cao Shi’s life.
Musk’s share made social network users curious, because the “brotherly” content seems to have little to do with him, who owns a fortune of more than $ 300 billion and does not have to go through a power struggle. which force. Many people try to speculate the real purpose of the richest billionaire in the world when sharing this poem.
David Beasley, director of the United Nations World Food Program, recently said that the super-rich like Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos should donate part of their wealth to help fight global hunger. Musk replied that he would sell Tesla stock and donate $6 billion to the World Food Program if the organization could state “exactly” how it would tackle world hunger.
Some Twitter users have suggested that the poem Musk posted alludes to cryptocurrency because the words sound similar. These users argued that the Chinese word bean, pronounced “dou”, is the same as “doge” (a cryptocurrency) in English.
Musk is very bullish on dogecoin on Twitter posts. In a broad sense, Musk can also express sadness about the infighting of humanity in general.
In 2000, former Chinese president Jiang Zemin used the last sentence in Lost the exam refers to the relationship with the island of Taiwan.
Famous people in China often quote ancient poems to indirectly express thoughts and feelings, but it is rare for influential people in the West to directly quote ancient Chinese literature. However, Musk has big business interests in China, after being allowed to open a Tesla factory in Shanghai, which will begin rolling out new Model 3s in late 2019.
