The fire is believed to have originated in the roof area of the hospital, which was undergoing repair work at more than 5 pm, creating a black smoke column hundreds of meters high that can be easily observed from afar.
More than 100 firefighters were mobilized to fight the fire. Doctors, nurses and maintenance staff at the hospital quickly evacuated patients in the emergency department from the burning building. By 19:00 pm on the same day, the fire was basically under control and the cause of the fire was being investigated.
According to information from the hospital, fortunately no patients or medical staff were seriously affected by this incident. It is known that St. John is an important medical center for emergency support for the Rockaway Peninsula area – one of the areas hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in New York City.
