The Oakland County, Michigan sheriff’s office said one of the eight injured was a teacher at the local Oxford High School.

The dead were a 16-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old, police chief Michael McCabe said.

The suspect, an Oxford student, is said to have acted alone and showed no resistance when arrested. Before that he had fired 15 to 20 shots.

“The whole thing lasted five minutes,” Sheriff McCabe said.

TV station WDIV reported that the suspect said nothing to police and demanded to speak to a lawyer.

Student Abbey Hodder told the newspaper Detroit Free Press that she was studying chemistry when she heard glass breaking.

“My teacher ran out and I saw him setting up a table as a barricade,” said little Hodder. “It was part of the school process so we all started setting up the tables and chairs.”

Police commended Oxford for its good response to the shooting and for an orderly evacuation.

President Joe Biden was briefed by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan about the shooting, White House Press Secretary Jan Psaki said.

“My condolences to the families who are enduring the incredible pain of losing a loved one,” Biden said.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the shooting “horrific”.

“As Michiganers, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect each other from gun violence,” said Whitmer, a Democrat.
