War are still two haunting words for all of us. If asked what they wish for the world, perhaps many people will not hesitate to say that it is the end of pointless wars. In the past and even now, bombs and bullets have taken countless lives and left irreparable losses for those who stayed. The fierce battlefield out there has turned millions of promises to return to nothing.
The boy’s father, Christian Golczynski, a former US soldier, also never returned. At the ceremony to hand over the martyr’s body to relatives later, Christian Golczynski was also present to “pick up his father”. Hiding tears in his eyes and biting his lip so he wouldn’t cry, the 8-year-old looked straight into the eyes of the Marine who was handing him the American flag he used to cover the coffin, as if praying he said “my father” still alive”.
The photo of the boy being handed back the American flag on his father’s coffin made the whole world cry
The emotional moment captured by photographer Aaron Thompson brought the whole world to tears. The photo seemed to carry a message of the times when it best and nakedly depicts the pain that war has left.
In 2007, Marine Marcus Golczynski died during the war in Iraq. The US military then proceeded to bring his body back to his hometown in the state of Tennessee. A flag and his memorabilia have been handed over to his young son, Christian.
After many years, that boy has grown up, becoming a resilient and strong man like the way he tried to swallow back his tears at the pain of losing his father that year. “The boy is like a copy of his father. It has grown a lot with the same physique as Marc. You can tell just by looking at him, he’s the son of the heroic soldier Marcus Golczynski.”Christian’s mother said.
In an interview, the wife of martyr Marcus Golczynski also opened up about her son’s life after losing his beloved father forever: “My son was never completely happy when he had to leave his father’s arms. However, from those same losses, he became stronger and more resilient than anyone. He is a man. the bravest I’ve ever known.”
To this day, Christian still has fond memories of his father, especially when participating in school activities. When friends have a father to cheer and support, Christian is alone and his mother. “I still miss my father very much. He still appears in my life every day. His friends still come to visit us sometimes and we talk to him.”, Christian shared.
Now, Christian has become a grown man
Christian is currently a graduate of the University of Alabama, majoring in Management Information Systems. Boy actively participate in sports and volunteer to teach sports to young children. Since the family lost the breadwinner, Christian’s mother has to bear the burden of being both a mother and a father to her son.
Christian Golczynski has also become an iconic voice for an organization that sponsors the generation of children of martyred fathers called “Soldier’s Child Foundation” started by Daryl Mackin. In a fundraising speech in 2019, Christian affirmed that his mother’s upbringing and the care of the Marines helped him become the person he is today.
“By supporting the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund, you are supporting me and kids like me. We all have goals and dreams that can help change the world. We We may be different, but not inferior to anyone. In fact, we are more passionate, more resilient and more determined. Thank you for making our educational dreams come true.”, Christian said.
