According to Reuters news agency, on the morning of September 10, the Japanese Navy detected a submarine sailing northwest outside its territorial waters, near Amami Oshima island, in Kagoshima Prefecture. They also spotted a Chinese destroyer in the vicinity.

On September 11, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) identified a strange submarine present in the contiguous zone, close to the territorial sea – the area where ships must declare their identities, according to the news agency. Reuters.

Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi instructed his subordinates to “collect information and maintain surveillance”.

Chinese Embassy officials in Japan were not immediately available for comment.

The Japanese Defense Ministry said the submarine continued to sail west near Yokoate Island. Japan has repeatedly complained about Chinese ships encroaching on its territorial waters and approaching disputed islands in recent years.

Meanwhile, China often reacts strongly when US ships pass through disputed areas in the South China Sea, a move the US calls the exercise of freedom of navigation.
