The State Department has requested “urgent guidance” from other agencies after the child brides were taken to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. At the same time, Afghan girls at a transit point in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates (UAE) say they were raped and forced to marry older men.

The above information is provided by the news agency AP citing internal documents sent to all US embassies, consulates and military command centers in Florida on August 27. According to the same file, several Afghan men brought to Fort McCoy claimed they had more than one wife.

The document was titled “Afghan Task Force 63 Situational Report” and read: “Reception staff at Fort McCoy reported multiple cases of minors presenting as ‘married’. ‘ with adult Afghan men, as well as polygamous families. The State Department has requested urgent guidance.”

According to a diplomatic cable sent by US officials in the UAE to Washington, many girls in the Humane City in Abu Dhabi claim that they have been sexually assaulted by their “husbands”.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on September 3 that the United States expected to take in at least 50,000 Afghans and possibly thousands more. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said as of September 3, about 25,600 Afghans were sheltering at US military bases. According to US Air Force General Glen VanHerck, about 1,000 Afghans have been resettled or displaced from military bases.

Of the thousands of Afghans arriving in the US, about 10,000 were required to undergo additional security checks, and 100 of these were assessed as “possibly with ties to the Taliban or terrorist groups”.

“Our commitment is a long-term commitment,” Mayorkas told reporters, revealing that there was no set limit or specific timeframe for evacuating more people from Afghanistan.

“This is not just a matter of the next few weeks. We will not rest until the end goal is complete. Our mission will not be completed until we have safely evacuated all the public. Americans who want to leave Afghanistan or lawful permanent residents, all individuals who have assisted the United States in Afghanistan,” Mayorkas added.
