“More than 50,000 Ukrainians have left the country in less than 48 hours – mostly to Poland and Moldova,” Filippo Grandi wrote on Twitter.

A day earlier, UNHCR had warned about 100,000 Ukrainians might be forced to flee their homes due to the fighting situation.

Mr. Grandi said “many others are making their way to the border” and thanked the governments and people of Ukraine’s neighbors “for keeping their borders open and welcoming to refugees”.

In a separate tweet, UNHCR specifically thanked Moldovan President Maia Sandu “for allowing people fleeing Ukraine to cross the border with Moldova safely”.
