Romanian billionaire dies in plane crash

ItalyA light plane piloted by Romanian billionaire Dan Petrescu crashed into an empty office building, killing him, his wife, children and five others.

The single-engine Pilatus PC-12 aircraft took off from Linate airport, Milan city at just over 13:00 on October 3 and headed for the city of Olbia, north of the Italian island of Sardinia. The plane crashed just minutes later in San Donato Milanese, a town southeast of Milan.

Witnesses said the plane caught fire before crashing into an office building that was being repaired. All eight people on board the plane died, including Petrescu’s 65-year-old wife, a French national, and their son Dan Stefano, 30.

Petrescu, 68, is one of the richest people in Romania. He heads a large construction company and owns a chain of supermarkets and trade centers. He also holds German citizenship, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala and his San Donato counterpart Andrea Checchi arrived at the scene. Deputy Prosecutor Tiziana Siciliano said the plane’s black boxes had been recovered. The Italian National Agency for Flight Safety (ANSV) has opened an investigation.
