Russian parliamentarian proposes to attack US bases in Europe

Senator Klintsevich said Russia should destroy the US base after it announced the delivery of HIMARS rocket artillery to Ukraine.

In a video excerpt from a Russian television program posted on social media on June 2, Senator Frant Klintsevich said “it is time for us to take action to warn them about the transfer of such systems”. refers to the M142 High Mobility Rocket System (HIMARS) that the US announced it will deliver to Ukraine.

According to senator Klintsevich, Russia needs to use high-precision long-range weapons to attack the loading and unloading places of weapons shipments to warn. “The time has come to destroy American bases in Europe,” Klintsevich said. “That’s my personal opinion. Russia needs to do the same if no one listens to us and the Russian people are threatened on their territory.”

Klintsevich said the Soviet Union shot down up to 1,270 US planes during the 1950-1953 Korean War, even though there was no war between the two countries at that time. The Russian senator also affirmed that although the Soviet Union shot down the American plane, “the world at that time did not come to an end”.

Mr. Klintsevich said Ukraine’s claim to use only the HIMARS complex for defense is meaningless. “It is impossible to negotiate with the US and Ukraine under these conditions,” Klintsevich said.

“We’re talking in a tolerant position and giving signals when it comes to red lines not being able to cross. Unfortunately, they see our tolerance and integrity as weak points.”

The comments were made by Senator Ramstein after the US announced that it would deliver to Ukraine HIMARS rocket artillery with a range of about 80 km. HIMARS is considered an important weapon that Ukraine requires US aid to prevent Russia from advancing on the Donbass fronts.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on June 2 that Kiev had assured them that it would not use HIMARS to attack targets inside Russia to avoid escalation.

Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly warned that the US and the West’s move to add weapons to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict, and vowed to target these weapons shipments when they reach Ukrainian territory.

The US maintains a significant number of bases in Europe, including 119 in Germany as of 2021. The largest US base in Germany is Ramstein Air Base with an area of 12 square kilometers.

Many of the countries in Europe where the US is based are members of the NATO military alliance. If Russia attacked US bases in Europe, that could trigger NATO’s mutual defense clause.
