Schools classify students based on parents’ background

ChinaAn elementary school in Shanxi province is causing controversy when it was discovered that it classifies students based on parents’ background and family background.

The principal and vice principal of the school in Yuanping city, Shanxi province, were reprimanded and warned. The incident was discovered after a “status sheet” of students went viral on the Chinese Internet last week.

According to this statistic, students are classified into different categories, including some such as: “children of leaders”, “children of powerful officials”, “children of businessmen”. “, “children of single parents” or “children of parents with a criminal record”. Other categories include “student dating” or “religious parent”.

The local education authority said it had asked schools to check students’ family records to develop a plan to help abandoned children and those from poor families. However, this primary school misunderstood the instructions of the authorities.
