According to the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), the quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of about 10km from the ground, in a district of Luzhou city of Sichuan province, China.

The quake struck at around 4:33 a.m. on September 16. After the incident, the Luzhou government activated an emergency response because of the earthquake level 1 in a 4-level response scale.

The quake struck about 120km southwest of Chongqing city. It is a megacity of China with about 30 million inhabitants. According to Reuters news agency, an earthquake has shaken Sichuan province.

People’s Daily newspaper said rescue forces were deployed to the epicenter area and evacuated and rescued people trapped after the earthquake.

According to the Luzhou government, as of 7:30 a.m. on September 16 (local time), there were 2 deaths and 60 injuries, nearly 7,000 people were evacuated from dangerous places.

The quake also collapsed several houses, trapping nine people. At present, the rescue work is still being carried out despite the rainy and windy weather.

The US Geological Survey and the German Geosciences Research Center gave different numbers from CENC for the magnitude of the quake, at 5.4 and 5.5, respectively.
