A suicide bomber detonated near the Russian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, today, but casualties and perpetrators are unknown.
“Taliban security forces guarding the Russian embassy detected and killed the suicide bomber before he could even reach his target… No casualties have been reported at this time,” said Mawlawi Sabir, a police officer. The head of the area where the explosion occurred in Kabul, said today.
Afghan media reported that a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt, causing a large explosion on Darulaman Road in the capital Kabul, near the entrance to the Russian embassy.
Witnesses said many students who had come to apply for Russian visas were waiting outside the embassy when the attack happened. The death toll could reach 20.
“There may be victims,” diplomatic sources told Sputnikbut no casualties have been reported among embassy staff.
Russia is one of the few countries that still maintains an embassy in Kabul after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan more than a year ago. The Taliban government is said to be negotiating with Russia to buy wheat, gasoline and oil from Moscow.
