AmericaLaura Russo is about to appear in court for allegedly giving a 17-year-old Covid-19 vaccine to a 17-year-old boy at her home on Long Island, New York state.
Laura Russo, 54, a science teacher at Herricks High School, gave the teen the Covid-19 vaccine while not being a healthcare worker or authorized to vaccinate, according to Nassau County, New York State police. .
The boy’s mother has not yet allowed her son to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. In New York, the minimum age for a person to be vaccinated without parental consent is 18, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit health care research organization in the US.
After leaving Russo’s house, the boy told his mother about the whole vaccination and she immediately called the police. Russo was arrested on the night of December 31 and placed under house arrest before being released.
Police said Russo was charged with illegal practice, under New York state education law. She will appear in court on January 21.
Fino Celano, principal of Herricks School, confirmed on January 4 that Russo is an employee of the school and is currently suspended from work. Police do not know where Russo got the Covid-19 vaccine to give the boy. Russo has not yet responded to a request for comment.
The US is facing a new wave of Covid-19, with an average daily infection of more than 547,000 cases, an increase of 254% in the past 14 days. About 74% of the US population has had at least one shot, of which 62% are fully vaccinated.
