Recently, the story of a Chinese man who has lived inside the airport for more than 14 years with his own free will has attracted a lot of attention from this country’s social media.
After losing his job at the age of 40, Wei Jianguo became so depressed that he drank and smoked all day to forget his midlife melancholy.
However, this habit made his family uncomfortable and forced Wei to give up two harmful pleasures if he wanted to continue living in the house. Feeling unable to do it, Wei moved to Beijing airport for comfortable stay.
The man lived at the airport for 14 years because he was too bored with his family
“I don’t want to go back home because I don’t have the freedom there,” Wei Jianguo told China Daily. “My family told me that if I wanted to stay, I had to quit smoking and drinking. If I couldn’t do that, I had to give them all the monthly allowance of 1,000 yuan (3.6 million VND). But then how will I buy tobacco and alcohol?”.
In fact, Wei has been escorted home by police and security several times over the years, but he always finds a way back to the airport. Explaining this, Wei said the airport’s modern amenities and facilities provided him with everything he needed and could do what he liked without being nagged by his family.

The unemployed man, now in his 60s, uses a rice cooker to prepare food in the airport terminal, but sometimes buys ready-to-eat food from one of the many restaurants there, which offer a wide variety of food. Delicious food with reasonable price.
Wei Jianguo keeps his kitchen utensils, blankets and clothes in a suitcase and insists he doesn’t need anything more. And if he did, Wei would only go out and buy the necessary things.
