The Lambda variant caught the attention of scientists as a potential new threat. This variant was first identified in Peru last December.

WHO classifies Lambda as a variant of concern, meaning it carries a mutation that could alter the risk of infection or cause more severe disease, but is still under further review. Laboratory studies show that the Lambda variant has a mutation against vaccine-produced antibodies.

Variation Mu

The Mu variant, also known as B.1.621, first appeared in Colombia in January of this year. On August 31, WHO classified Mu as a variant of concern due to several mutations in this variant.

The Mu variant carries mutations including E484K, N501Y and D614G, which may increase infectivity and decrease immune system protection. A WHO bulletin released last week found that the Mu variant was responsible for some of the larger outbreaks in South America and Europe.
