Recently, a group of Italian sailors were shocked and confused after catching a fish that looked like the result of an affair between a pig and a shark!?

The creature was discovered swimming in the water by the sailors of a naval ship anchored in Darsena Medicea, in the town of Portoferraio on the Italian island of Elba.

Soon after, residents of the town of Portoferraio showed up and said the animal was actually an Angular shark – the scientific name is Oxynotus centrina and usually lives at a depth of about 700 meters on the seabed.

This peculiar fish is sometimes referred to by a very common name – which is obvious to everyone – the pig-faced shark. This species specializes in living in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Although living near the bottom of the sea, the Angular shark is currently listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as extremely rare because it is at very high risk of extinction.
