A couple in the US state of California died just a few weeks apart, leaving behind 5 children including a newborn baby girl a few weeks old.
According to television station KTLA, Daniel Macias (39) passed away on September 9 just a few weeks after his wife Davy Macias (37) died of complications from Covid-19 after giving birth to a child. Thursday in August.

Davy Macias’ younger brother, Vong Serey, said that her sister and her husband contracted Covid-19 after a trip to the beach and the family’s indoor water park.Living in the California city of Yucaipa, the couple have five children aged 7, 5, 3 and 2, and a fifth child who is just a few weeks old. Now, all 5 children live in the care of grandparents.
It is known that both Daniel and Davy Macias must be in the intensive care unit (ICU) after contracting Covid-19. The baby in Ms. Davy’s belly was also forced to give birth 6 weeks earlier, due to the mother’s health condition worsening. Unfortunately, neither husband nor wife had the opportunity to name their youngest daughter before her death.
According to Mr. Serey, Ms. Davy was originally a nurse but had not received the Covid-19 vaccine and hesitated to think about vaccination while pregnant.
Meanwhile, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged pregnant women to get the Covid-19 vaccine, because studies show that the vaccine does not increase the risk of miscarriage.
It is not clear whether Daniel, a middle school teacher, had received the vaccine before contracting Covid-19, or not.
“This is very sad. We were really hoping Daniel would recover after his wife passed away. We want him to wake up so he can name his newborn daughter,” said relative, Terri Serey.
After the Macias passed away, family members raised funds for the five orphans through the GoFundMe page. As of September 13, GoFundMe has raised more than 204,000 USD for 5 children.
The US used to be the country with the top vaccination rate in the world, but now it has dropped to 57th place globally. The reason is due to people’s reluctance to vaccinate against Covid-19 and partisan divisions.
Specifically, the US Covid-19 vaccination rate is currently quite modest in the group of rich countries, with 53.9% of the population fully vaccinated. According to Bloomberg, the US is ranked 57th in the world in terms of the proportion of the population vaccinated and only a few Western European countries such as Switzerland are currently behind the US.
