In New York, works of art Tribute in light (consisting of 88 vertical spotlights arranged into two light columns) cast two beams of light into the sky to represent the twin towers.
Relatives of victims across the United States spent a day in memory of their loved ones who died in the terrorist attack 20 years ago.
Two hijacked planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City just before 9:00 a.m. on September 11, 2001 (local time). The third plane crashed into the west side of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m.
