According to Bloomberg News, professor of biological sciences Leondios Kostrikis at the University of Cyprus said:There are now cases of both Omicron and Delta variants. And we found a virus that combines these two variants.”

He added that this variant was named “Deltacron” because Cypriot scientists discovered that this variant carries the genome of the Delta variant but has genetic markers similar to the Omicron variant.

Professor Kostrikis and his team have identified 25 infections with this variant. The frequency with which the new variant appeared was higher in those who were hospitalized than in those who were not.

The genetic sequences of 25 cases of the Deltacron variant were submitted to GISAID, an international database that tracks changes in the virus, on January 7.

It is not clear whether the Deltacron variant causes more severe disease or is more contagious than the Delta and Omicron variants. But in Professor Kostrikis’ personal view, this variant will also be dominated by the Omicron variant – which is said to be very contagious.

News of the Deltacron variant comes as the Omicron variant continues to spread globally, causing the number of COVID-19 cases to skyrocket. According to CNBC’s analysis as of January 7, the US recorded more than 600,000 new cases per day (average of 7 days), an increase of 72% compared to the previous week.
