The FBI recorded a 29.3% increase in murder crimes in the US in 2020 from a year earlier. This is the fastest increase since the 1960s.

Newspaper Washington Post The vast majority of these killings are caused by gun violence. Specifically, gun violence accounted for 76% of homicides in the US in 2020, compared with 73% in 2019.

The city of Houston, Texas, saw the number of gun homicides increase from 221 in 2019 to 343 in 2020, a 55% increase.

According to the FBI, overall violent crimes in the United States increased by 5.6% to nearly 1.3 million cases.

Meanwhile, crimes of robbery, appropriation and vandalism in the US fell 7.8 percent to nearly 6.5 million cases. This is the 18th year in a row that the number of crimes related to this crime has decreased.

Newspaper New York Times said that there is no simple explanation to “decipher” why the rate of homicide in the US is so high. Many of the economic and social problems that have arisen in the wake of the pandemic and increased gun sales have all contributed to this situation.

According to Sheriff Harold Medina of the Albuquerque City Police Department, New Mexico, the COVID-19 pandemic, protests and many other issues have pushed the number of American homicides up.

“We cannot find a single cause to talk about the current situation,” Medina said.

Follow Washington Post, officials from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party are disagreeing about the causes and methods of solving this situation.

Republicans blamed overly strict police policies in cities controlled by Democratic leaders. In contrast, the administration of President Joe Biden sees the current ease of gun ownership as the reason.

President Biden has focused on gun violence in his anti-crime policy. The US President called on local and federal leaders to work together more deeply to solve this problem.

Mr. Biden has pledged to push for changes to gun laws in the US. In June 2021, he announced a number of measures to prevent criminals from accessing guns.

President Biden also announced methods to hold individuals responsible for selling illegal weapons to the law and help states recruit more police through the COVID-19 relief fund.
