Lady Akie Abe bowed to the guests before placing flowers under her husband’s ashes.
The national mourning ceremony comes more than two months after Mr. Abe’s private funeral was held at Tokyo’s Zojoji Temple on July 12, with the participation of only the former prime minister’s family and friends, led by his wife Akie. Abe presided. The former prime minister’s body was cremated at Kirigaya Funeral Home after a private funeral.
Some earlier reports said that after the national mourning ceremony, Mr. Abe’s urn would be brought back to his hometown in Yamaguchi Prefecture and buried in the family cemetery, next to the grave of his father, Shintaro Abe.
